Hey Caine. I've been following that other branch with interest, but I didn't want to annoy everyone there by asking you about Yammer. I work there so I'm clearly biased.

I just want to know what you like about Yammer and what keeps you from using it for more things. Why is hipchat more appealing than the Yammer chat? Internally, we use Yammer for almost all the things you listed here, with the exception of tasks. I don't think Yammer covers everything, but I'm always curious to hear about workflows that it doesn't support well.

Does Yammer have support for chat rooms? If so, does it have an API we can push notifications? We use it sort of as a way to keep track of things with OPs channels etc. I guess we could have made an external group for the user forum. We have thought about that in the past.

Yeah I figured that was part of the problem. Yammer chat is based around private messages to individuals. Rather than chat rooms, we have open groups where people post messages. These groups operate in "near real-time" rather than instant chat. That's probably where most smaller teams are put off. I want to have open instant chat rooms as well. It remains to be seen whether we'll go in that direction.

Our api will definitely let you post messages from an automated service. And I think it makes sense to use a different company that's more targeted to external communication. Yammer is definitely focused internally for now.
