No matter which group you belong to - twinks, bears, supermodels, dorks - you always have a reason as a gay man to hate your body and be constantly reminded why you should. This article pretty much sums up the idea and the main arguments.

People are discriminating and self-critical on a regular basis. I think of all my straight female friends who stress about how their boyfriends view them. And then I think about all my gay male friends who have the exact same complaints with regards to their boyfriends and how they view their own bodies, as compared to their boyfriend's, friends, trainers, Starbucks baristas and mailmen. That type of behaviour and outlook is pretty common, whether straight or gay. I just think that, much like emotions are ten-fold with a lesbian couple, that level of self-criticism is amplified when it's a gay couple.

Sorry, I do not know exactly where sent the answer... but I repeat:

I don't know gays who hate their bodies, I know gays who enjoy their body more than I do with mine, being heterosexual. You may refer to transsexuals, mental sex with a different body, then it is understandable that they hate their bodies.

I understand that the article refers to obsession to have a perfect body, but that is not exclusive to gays, I'm heterosexual and I'm also pretty obsessed with keeping my body fairly well, and many people like me, not only of my environment, gays included. From my point of view are the times, we want to be beautiful, want to look and be healthy. While there is no radical obsession...

Unfortunately, we are very superficial when we try to judge us, when you say "why gays" i think is not correct, this happens with the same frecuency in straights, bisexuals, etc. We need to have a comparison point for everything, ¿why?, maybe is better than create a self opinion about the world and beauty around us. Maybe you'll think that you're going to be alone forever if you are not an stereotypical person. Personally, That's one of my big fears, the loneliness, and perhaps we just need filling that space in our lives or we are just obsessed to have a "perfect" life. I don't know, i prefer love. That's it.

I think perhaps the opening statement should have been 'why is it never enough for some gay men.' I know where Christo is going with this, and I understand completely the points of the other posters, but I can only speak from personal experience. The majority of the gay men I count as close friends tend to go overboard on the preening. Nothing's ever enough, is what I mean. And yes it happens with many heterosexual men, but a large portion of them truly trumpet "I'm sexy and I know it," even if their version of sexy doesn't jive with others'. As my gay best friend once said "Big (read: heavyset) straight men still think they're hot stuff. I see that from a gay man and I think he's delusional." I can't say I disagree completely with that.

I don't disagree because that's been my personal experience, as well as the experience of my other lesbian friends. The most questionable straight males approach us, convinced of their appearance and attractiveness, when most of them encounter nothing but disdain from my straight female friends. It's amazing, really! And I think at the heart of it all, this is what Christo meant: that many gay males (not all) are never truly satisfied with how hot or attractive or muscular they are, and that gives the impression that they hate their bodies. But again, that's just my interpretation.
