I have found moleskines to very durable, pages never tear unless you want them to. It has 10 perforated pages in the back for easy removal and it is super thin and slides into a pocket without really being noticed.

Wouldn't be adverse to other notebooks but none seem quite as nice and I am smitten.

There is no other bag that I have ever come across that matches it in quality, durability, and comfort (I did the padded attachment for the strap). It is the best bag I have ever owned, hands down. I have carried it every day for over 2 years and it looks brand new and their isn't a rip, tear, or even a scratch on the thing!
My ONLY gripe is that the middle pocket for the laptop is only attached on the sides and not the bottom. So, if I have files or something in the back of the bag, they can potentially slide down and under the laptop part.
Other than that, the thing is perfect!
I also picked up the TimBuck2 bags that zip into a small square (helps to have at farmers markets). They also are still in great shape. I highly recommend them.

I like TOM BIHN a lot. I was looking at their Super Ego messenger bag, but I couldn't find a version that was large enough for all of the above but would also "collapse down" if I just wanted to carry my MBP and a few small items. My bag is 3069 cu. in. The Super Ego is 1680 cu. in. Price is similar, quality looks similar. Style is a little different, but for me, I needed something that would replace a briefcase and a diaper bag, have room for gadgets, and I could throw over my shoulder every day and walk, bike, or drive and was water proof (not submersible). TB2 hit the nail on the head for me.

Right absolutely - thankfully there are a few select companies that step it up and really put a ton of work in the design and quality of their bags. In that regard, there's still a little option when it comes finding high-caliber products.

The initial question is about necessities on the go, but why are you all talking only about digital stuff? What about a good book, a toothbrush, a manual shaver and some business cards ?

Not everyone has posted those kind of things! I personally don't carry much of anything other than digital to save space. So I keep books and other electronic material on my devices. And no matter where you go, you carry a toothbrush or manual shaver? If so, that's cool! Write it. But most of us are thinking like day-to-day.

On a usual day, these things can be found in my bag:

- MacBook 13" (late 2008), plus charger

And because I'm a literature student and ebook-readers are not allowed in exams, I usually carry around a couple of paperbacks.
