In the wake of the now recanted allegations against Kevin Clash I'm wondering what role the media needs to play when stories like this start percolating? It seemed to be a race to the bottom as news orgs quickly began reporting on the reporting, creating a game of telephone without any actual investigations being done.
So 1) Is it right to report on a topic without doing original reporting and investigating and 2) What burden is carried then to follow up and correct their non-reporting?
