Recommending things to others without, in many cases, even spending enough time with what we are recommending. Building things that almost embrace people being mindless, casual, and not having to think about it. Why?"

I think we've mirrored real word interactions in this regard. I have more clothes than I would ever need. I have 75GB of music. It would take me years to listen to it all. I find myself on my phone constantly liking, tweeting, starring, favoriting. I think we've lost the ability to sit back and appreciate without sending a digital message to prove we're still alive. Yet, I say this with 4 screens in front of me wondering if I could use a larger monitor...

I think that we have missed an important motivation behind this behavior: we, each, already know that there is a huge amount of content out there, on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. and the more we post, like, reblog, share, the better chances we have of being followed, favorited, friended ourselves. We contribute more to increase the opportunity of being seen.

And I think this is a problem, that just a few of us are now turning to, to solve. How do we take someone who isn't already famous for some other reason, and design a system to build up that voice, that curation, without forcing them to just post as much as possible. How do we build a system that inherently benefits active and careful curation?

Most people are like echo chambers. They repeat interesting stuffs they find on the internet. I use this phenomenon as my social filters. By adjusting my social networks to fit my personal consumption preferences, I managed to apply these crowd-sourced filters to my news feeds. This can be applied in Twitter, Google Reader, and even Facebook.

Nowadays, I write for my own blog. I try to write one post a day. It's much easier to become an echo chamber compared to a content creator. But, I believe that contributing your unique opinions is no less valuable than becoming an echo chamber for your social peers.

I believe people will be more mature and start filtering their social peers by what they are sharing.

What if you could only follow 25 people on Twitter?

@adamjorlen: That's an interesting thought. I would choose to follow 25 people who are not my friends and do not have their personal websites regularly updated. This is all under the assumption that I could get in touch with my best friends through other services such as Path and Facebook, and follow the other people by subscribing to their RSS.

What about yourself?

Probably 25 people with no connection to each other from completely different areas in order to find stuff that's fresh. Yes, assuming that I'm in touch with my friends on other sites.

Adam / Eric: I recently chopped off 50% of the accounts I followed on Twitter. Now I can see the info I really care, so it works.

Only one thing... I'm on Cristina's side - lately, I've been stopping myself of sharing *everything*; I hold down the phone and choose to keep it with the people I'm with in that moment.

I believe there's something special when you leave things away from digital and keep them analog - or better: with friends and family (... "neuronal"?)

Actually, I'm planning moving all to Path but I have no friends there. lol.

I constantly come back to this 2008 piece by the excellent Kevin Kelly [@kevin2kelly] - "The Bottom is Not Enough": kk.org - it seems even more relevant than ever before. We need curators, sifters, editors to help us make sense of the quantity of noise.

The problem the web brings I think is that is casts us all into a kind of "can't read enough!" frenzy - we'll never get through it all, obviously, but the bigger issue is that we start to feel as if we're missing things all the time. The answer is: of course we're missing things - we always have been since the dawn of time - only now we *know about it* so it makes us feel hugely unsettled..
