Battery technology. It's an extremely low-level bit of tech for most consumer discussion, but it drives so many aspects of what technology we get in our hands. LTE? Gotta have battery to do it right. Retina display in iPad (3)? Giant battery.

I think that the advancements in carbon nanotube electrodes in batteries looks promising, and they're nearing production.

And Apple recently filed a patent for induction charging that could allow an iPhone to be charged via a magnet traveling past a coil inside the device.

Project Glass and wearable technology for sure. The fact that we'll be able to record and share specific parts of our lives from a brand new perspective excites me.

If you are talking about right now, commercially available, it has to be smart motion / gesture & voice control. I agree with Drew on the Project Glass or wearable technology which will the next big thing when products become available in the mass market!

Got to agree with Matthew - batteries. If we can get smaller, longer-lasting batteries, it will unlock all sorts of exciting possibilities.

I certainly agree that emerging battery technologies are important, but is that the means or the innovation? Will smaller, longer-lasting batteries alone revolutionize or (dare I say it) disrupt anything?

I'm going to go with distributed software systems, most notably systems like node.js and NoSQL. We've started cheating Moore's Law through parallel computation, but this means we'll have to start developing more and more multi-threaded and multi-process software.
