Remember MySpace Top Friends? Those two little rows of four faces? And how big a deal it was to be on (or not be on) someone's list?

Remember how you'd have your core group of 4 friends who for the most part wouldn't change, but then you'd use the second row to you'd swap out a few here and there based on who was in your inner circle at the moment?

Yeah. I want that. But for everything — albums, blog posts, gadgets, clothes, websites.

A little landing page (similar to about.me) that lets me list what I'm into right now (similar to thisismyjam.com). I don't want to pin thousands of things, or show that I'm listening to hundreds of songs.

I want one place, with just a few things. Constraints are good.

Thoughts?

Why do you want this, exactly? (Not nay-saying, just analyzing)

I haven't personally used it to keep track of my top likes in different categories but I have heard from people that top10.com is a very nice and easy way to keep track of what you like.

@Wesley - I want a little patch of grass.

I feel like so much of what we do online is chuck our thoughts/ideas/favorites/etc. into the stream, hoping they manage to keep their heads above water long enough for someone to notice them. It's amazing that we can build algorithms that spit our preferences back at us, and there's a lot of value in surfacing patterns we didn't know were there, but after a while, if you build products just to optimize for that, all that just becomes data in aggregate. No fun.

There's something to be said for having something of our own to tend to, I think—our own little patches of grass.

top10 is okay, i think ten may be too many though. also, i wish it was more individual focused. I like the idea of getting to know someone through their ultimate favorites. The worth is more in the favorites, less in the rankings.

(And, for the record, I'm not saying this would be some world-changing social product. I just kind of think it'd be fun to have, even as a hack!)

I want it too, but my hunch is it is only valuable in the context of a network. The types of lists you'll want to display will likely differ depending on who think will be viewing it – potential employers versus potential dates, for example.

Facebook used to have this – my movies section included American History X and Layer Cake – but for some reason they've chosen to deemphasize it. I wonder who would have the best shot at filling this void? I just don't think it would be a compelling standalone service.

Twitter is an interesting candidate. About.me seems more utilitarian (correct me if I'm wrong, Ryan), but could be a contender too.

@Josh I have felt the same way about Facebook moving away from my favorties. The only time I felt that my likes and favorites on Facebook actually meant something was when I used Airtime the day it was released.

@Libby I see. Well, once would imagine you could automate this by tapping into your streaming service's counter for music listens (Rdio does it), and various other services, but you seem to implying more of a hand made choice style set up. I think it would have to live on another platform, maybe a FB plug in, for anyone to actually see it.

I have no coding/design experience. Just ideas. So this may not help but...

What if you found a Tumblr theme that you liked and:

-Set it up to have say 15 posts that you could keep as "templates" for these current faves.

-Update those templates posts whenever you want to change your current faves.

-Use GetGlue/Spotify/Pinterest/whatever as your source for whatever you're pulling in.
