Do we need a micro-publishing solution for data journalism?
Do we need a micro-publishing solution for data journalism?
I put together a fictional user story:
feathe.rs
The described sort of distributed document collaboration can be as simple as two people doing a ping-pong of ideas and as complex as special interest groups gathering around topics. For example a political group could consist of journalists, political scientists, and politicians discussing and peer-reviewing together visualizations on Swiss politics.
Definitely. Keeping production and product close together is one of the big challenges for livingdocs and is especially hard for a complex document like the "data document". It should never be or feel anything like a CMS!
I think that the data wrapper will be hard, so going from the data source to the first visualization of it. Tweaking a visualization should be much easier to do (think simple context menus in place). I am looking into the Google Charts API at the moment. Any suggestions for other Javascript data wrappers?
Datawrapper looks very interesting, especially since it was designed with similar goals in mind. Two questions if anybody knows:
1. Did Datawrapper manage to address non-technical journalists (as opposed to the digital strategists who are more tech-savvy anyway) and how did they do it?
2. Will the project be actively maintained and how (state backing, hobby, etc.)?
