Anyone notice the similarities between these shows (besides the obvious supernatural thing)?

Which one is trashier?

I would've said Teen Wolf after watching a whole season of forehead-bashing idiocy, but I'm 3 episodes into Vampire Diaries and they're already directly copying Teen Wolf. I'm thinking if your source of inspiration is some other trashy show, you're the trashiest.

Ian Somerhalder basically makes anything classy, though.

I haven't seen either of these, which one would you suggest. Also Robey you can just add the group and everyone in the group gets automatically added :)

Vampire Diaries started in 2009 and Teen Wolf in 2011, so unless you're saying season 4 of VD is copying something out of TW season 1, it's not likely. All teen drama follows the same tropes, though (and I should know, since I watch WAY more supernatural teen drama than I am comfortable with admitting...).

I think Teen Wolf really found its footing in season 2 and thereafter has been the better-written show. VD peaked in season 3 and has thereafter been getting into progressively sillier plots as they run out of material, especially since everybody is now CLEARLY TOO OLD TO BE IN HIGH SCHOOL. (Somerhalder in particular has visibly aged over the course of the show, which is tricky to explain given that he is supposed to be immortal)

Three episodes into VD and everybody is already CLEARLY TOO OLD TO BE IN HIGH SCHOOL. :) Casting two identical-aged women as a teenage girl and her aunt is very Jenna Maroney. And having a 30 year old man play the 15 year old "little brother" is beyond the pale.

We've started degenerating into MST3K-ing it. Damon is such a terrible actor, too. (Sorry, Ver.) All he does is leer and surprise people in a sort of "Boo!" way.

There's a lot of wasted opportunity for Heathers-style wordplay, but instead, oddly, the only truly likable character is the drug dealer.

New thoughts on VD after a few more episodes:

Damon is more interesting when he does mean things, instead of just talking about how he might do some mean things if the main vamp (the forgettable boy) doesn't watch out.

Having the adults band together and already know way more about what's going on than the "teenagers" is a smart move.

There are several deliberate Buffy references, including the witch who is basically channeling a Buffy character all the time.

Unlike Teen Wolf, VD appears to pass the feminist test: Two women, who are main characters, are often seen on screen, talking to each other, not about boys.

Damon's acting style = snarky comments + periodically widening his eyes.

I'm pretty sure Teen Wolf's characters pass that test by season 2. The women are *in charge* of the hunters, and spend a lot of time going on and on about that.

I need to hop on the VD train. I did watch season 1 of Teen Wolf and was pissed I missed the airing of season 2 (had no idea it was back). I enjoyed season 1 for some reason. Any idea if season 2 is on netflix or somewhere yet? Did they green light a season 3 yet? So many questions... about Teen Wolf.

Okay, back to Teen Wolf (season 2, which is on Netflix now) and the writing is all over the place. Episode 1 makes you sorry you went to the effort of pressing "play" but then episode 2 kicks ass. This continues for the 5-6 epis we've watched so far: some great, some truly awful. VD was consistently treacly-bad.

Colton Haynes' acting is so over-the-top terrible that it's a true joy to watch. I wish they used him more in season 2. I can't get enough of him pouting, trying to out-drama his girlfriend, or screeching his little red sports car across parking lots. I guess he's been replaced by the outcast-wolf-pack, which is a much better idea anyway.

Colton is there to look pretty, a role at which I think we can all agree he excels.
