Creating this branch to continue this discussion. I think it's an interesting area to explore. The value of tighter integration between language and tooling, vs looser more "de-coupled" integration of general purpose tools with more dynamic languages.

I agree with Adam D. on his point about VIm learning stagnating easily. ReSharper was pretty quick to get 80-90% of the benefit out of. VIm almost seems to demand daily "kata" practice to improve at.

With that said small things in VIm have been returns. Split management is huge and I'm always shocked at how bad this is in modern editors like VS and even new ones like Sublime Text.

ReSharper also did more than just refactoring for me, it made me a better C# coder. Insightful suggestions, loop-lambda refactoring, etc. all showed me much more than I previously new about writing C#.

Given that I'm still happier now with where Adam S., Chris C. and I are with RoR.

Yep I agree with Vim learning stagnating easily. A pattern I see in my learning are long periods of slow progress followed by a sudden spike (or aha!). The payoffs are worth it.

In terms of refactoring, I find it's a different problem for dynamic languages than static languages. Perhaps you write more boilerplate code in c#/java (like interfaces, mappings, DTOs etc). Now that I'm more effective with grep and regex, doing sweeping renames is less arduous. There's no denying that R# does this beautifully though.

In terms of code extraction, I just don't see that as a big issue. As I develop I work within a single file until I get it right anyways. I got into the habit of navigating around files using regex searching (/ and ?) so moving code around is pretty straight forward. As @lucisferre said, split management in Vim is beautiful, so working between files (navigating between panes) is second nature now.

The large amount of ceremony code in static languages is what makes refactoring tools a must. Didn't miss ReSharper much since starting with RoR, and I'm still very much a vim newbie. The only part I'm missing are the suggestions on how to improve the code.

Resharper for something like Scala is where the magic is at. We're at the mercy of what's popular however to keep our shops staffable.

I've have to agree on the learning process with Vim ... it's an incredibly powerful app but the learning curve is quite steep as Vim programing is nearly a language in and of itself ... But I have to admit ... Once I took about a month to really get what the fascination with Vim was about ... I was hooked.

For anything non-Microsoft related I'm exclusively using Intellij and Vim for all my dev work ...

Why not ReSharper for Microsoft stuff?

I prefer Intellij and {G,M}Vim to any other IDE / TE combos as they are the only two apps that are consistent on all the platforms I use; Windows, Linux, Mac ...

Ha! - Well I don't 'technically' have a real Mac ... I built Custom Mac but I'd much rather develop on Windows or Debian ... Java 64 bit doesn't run apps too well on OSX.

Hackintosh is better than overpaying for that hardware. You win points there. Do you do that just to develop for iOS iPhone apps? I think you can just rent space in the cloud to do that and there's phonegap.

You know if you guys want to have a mac vs. whatever discussion you could use the "branch" button ;P.
