When I see a new social network that tries to piggyback off my existing facebook/twitter/google+ social graph I can't help but think they are doing it wrong.

Take music as an example. I LOVE music, and I love my friends, but there isn't a huge crossover where the two meet. I don't think any of my friends shares my obsessive passion for Tori Amos, or would listen to Kate Bush's 50 Words for Snow (open.spotify.com) on repeat weeks on end.

Where social networks aggregate around things, not people. Social networks for me are a way to make NEW friends who share common interests who I may never meet in real life but might be able to guide me to new things I've never seen before rather than keep tabs on what my friends have been listening too (sorry, but most of you I don't share your music tastes, and you don't share mine... I'm okay with that, we're friends for other reasons).

When I first used twitter I made some great internet friends with people who were obsessed as I was about LesMills (twitter.com) True Blood (twitter.com) and Battlestar Galactica and last.fm was a great place to find other people as excited about the next Tori concert as I was they were cool places to hang out. Now I feel like I just look at cat gifs on Tumblr, but I don't feel like I'm interacting with people, instead just admiring their broadcasts.

Where's the best place to make new friendships these days online?
