CUNY's EJ class: How can we, as entrepreneurial journalists, navigate ethical concerns that arise at the intersection of seeking truth and seeking revenue?
Our class is based on the idea that we can pursue revenue and pursue journalistic integrity simultaneously, or near-simultaneously. Do you agree or disagree? Are there examples in current media where you see a breakdown of this model?
For example, what about Quartz's business model? In many ways I think it's revolutionary, but I see a potential conflict of interest in sponsorship from a few companies that may very well end up the subject of Quartz's journalism. What's the best way to frame that to your staff and your readers?
Rough thoughts and brainstorming appreciated! :)
