I think your point about when meaning is created is particularly insightful, Katie, and it raises a number of interesting questions:
- If meaning is generated once we start using a system, when exactly is that? The Google search result for the brand/product? The URL we see on the rooftop of a taxi? The brand page we visit on facebook?
- Going back to Thomas' point about the designer's role in creating the UI/UX, does it make more sense to refer to all of the interfaces provided by the system as the "UI," and to leave "UX" only as the resulting set of interactions and the user's interpretation of them?
- Given that the dialogue metaphor applies to interaction design so, why is a semiotic approach to UX not widespread?
