Ever since seeing Tupac reincarnated at Coachella I've been bringing back the early 90s stuff though – OLD Mobb Deep (The Infamous), Tribe, etc.

Killer Mike's new album is fantastic. El-P produced the whole thing... his new album is good as well.
If you find that US rap isn't hitting the mark, then you could have a look at the UK 'grime' scene. There are loads of artists there making it big within the scene, and in the charts.
Chase & Status, Tinie Tempah, Plan-B and Dizzee Rascal are all easy entry points.
On the US side of things, I've been really enjoying Childish Gambino and iLLmont, both of who's latest albums can be got on a free or pay what you want basis from their sites.
