Friends who have been to a North Fork winery or two according to Foursquare: I'm going out for the first time this weekend and want to hit a few good vineyards/wineries on the way. (And, okay, maybe the way back.)

A friend showed me One Woman Wines, which looks great, but... other suggestions? Places to avoid at all costs?

Check out Castelo di Borghese Vineyard - it boasts the oldest vineyards in the area and specializes in Cabernet Franc. Since it's summer, I'd recommend checking out Croteaux Vineyards, which focuses in roses (that is, if you like rose). And though the tasting room is underwhelming, Waters Crest Winery is cool, and they'll probably let you in the back to see the winery. :) Happy travels!

Awesome. At Borghese they have a winemaker's tour and tasting for $20... Ever been? Worth it, or just stick to a regular tasting?

I haven't done the tour, but I have done a regular tasting there. Do the reserve tasting if the various options are offered up. :) The vineyards are just outside the tasting room, too, so if you miss the tour, you can get a good look on your own. If you can make the tour, though, I bet it'd be fun. I love winery/vineyard tours!

I have to second miss Swallow and say definitely stop at Croteaux--the ambiance is amazing, you feel like you're at a chateau in the French countryside, and the tasting flights are great ways to expand your rose sensability! The backyard has seating and there is a really cool barn as well. Enjoy!

Agreed. The backyard area of Croteaux is so relaxing. I remember them having orange flowers, too (just a side note since orange is my favorite color). :D And yes, the flight was amazing. Before heading out there, I didn't really realize just how diverse roses could be. But they really showed me!

(Also, side note, is there anywhere particularly good for renting bikes / riding them? We're staying in Greenport but will have a car so are flexible...)

No sure on biking. We had a designated driver buddy. :) All I can say is that the wine buses look lame, so don't do that. You don't want to look lame. Right?

Noted! And yes, tour buses of any sort = the lamest of the lame.

Ahem--on the note of this drunk driving bit, seriously eat at each place...always be safe whilst wine tasting :)

Thanks for this, friends! Ended up going to Croteaux (A+ backyard area, even despite the A+ douchebag sitting adjacent to us talking oh so very loudly about his exciting job in "online ad sales") and Sparkling Point for a little bubbly. Also did the North Fork Table and was, as expected, really fantastic.
