"A few months ago, my fifteen-year-old sister told me that Snapchat was going to be the next Instagram. Many months before that she told me that Instagram was being used by her peers as much as Facebook. Both times I snickered."

When I started reading this, I thought I would recognize much, but no. Although I'm just a bit older, I think totally different on lots of the topics mentioned. Is it the country difference, or? I'll just go through my views on the topics.

Instagram
Of course Facebook was smart to buy Instagram, I think they paid to much, but hey, it will probably earn more. When I fire up Instagram, I see a lot of different thinks, from ice cream to landscapes and from clothes to scotch. This is totally different from my Facebook newsfeed, which shows me some meme's and pictures of my Italian niece.

Facebook
On every screen I am, Facebook is. It works nice and I like the blue color. I tested a few times and having Facebook opened in Safari doesn't mean I'm less productive. Well as long as I'm not chatting.

Instant Message
I grew up with Microsoft Messenger, or MSN, or how the hell they call it now. And I've been using that until around may last year. When I fired it up a few weeks ago I noticed how many people stopped using it. Until a few months I used AIM to talk with some of my friends, using Apple products. And I still find myself chatting around 2 hours a day with Facebook (using the normal iOS app).

I think e-mail is a whole different deal, I still spend a lot of time e-mailing, especially with my boss and with customers. I have way to much e-mail addresses that I all use (even the Facebook one) and I check them all every two hours or so. I find myself being a natural spam filter,

I just don't read spam, newsletters and other crap anymore. I just sits in my mailbox and I mark everything read every now and then (2997 unread mails ATM).

Snapchat
I tried to use Snapchat but it doesn't accepts my Dutch +31 cell number. So I'm giving my take on Facebook Poke: I use it sometimes as a replacement for Facebook Chat, but don't really get it.

Tumblr
I used Tumblr as a blog, don't use it anymore. I want control and therefor self-hosted stuff (use WP now).

Twitter
I, and much of the people I know use Twitter much. I use it for communication, as long as it doesn't require privacy. Further I like it as a tool to make my English less bad.

More
I think that every generation now sees a change in what they are using daily. You mentioned Myspace -> Facebook and I had the same thing with Hyves -> Facebook. I think the next big fail will be Twitter if they are restricting their API usage even more.

Questions
I was wondering, how much do teenagers in the US consider starting a company?

Last week I got called hipster, which shocked me. And now I'm shocked because I also feel old. I prefer the first I guess. Well, at least, hopefully, I can say that I was using the next big thing before it was cool. And that the next big thing is Branch.

I do not want to comment on the media being used. However, I do think there is an underlying trend throughout this article and many other trends I see online. Josh's sister states it best at the end: "a FaceTime-esque app that’s free [...] to save money."

Saving money is essential when you're young. You have to be clever to fit your limited budget. It is why we taped radio music, recorded tv films on VHS, download mp3's, torrent films. You try and make the most with what you have. It's not always pretty or legal, but do you see young people caring?

The platforms don't really seem to matter. Price and quality are what seems to attract the young masses.
