@Trent Walton - Would love to get your thoughts on ways to make long-form writing for the web a friendlier experience. I've done everything I can on this site to make it as easy to read as possible, and responsive to different devices. However, getting visitors to read a long chapter online is difficult, to say the least. It helps if they move it to a reading tool like Readability or Instapaper. What else can be done?

I have some JS in place that tracks scroll depth on long pages. Only 12% of visitors scrolled all the way to the bottom. Obviously there is a margin of error here, but that's a pretty low number.

I think the text-image is to big. It screams "you're going to read this NOW!!!!!!!". Instead of saying "Hey, this is some interesting stuff, you should read this"... and my brain tells me "oh, anders. you're not going to endure that reading", while I want it to tell me "Hell yes. I want to read this".

I'm well aware that you work for Hoefler & Frere-Jones, and I really admire your design & coding skills. So I'm not as well versed in typography as you colleagues, but if I were to give some tip on what to do with the excisting design without changing the size, I would add a bit more line-height and drop the text-indent, and do regular paragraphs. I understand the look and feel you're going for, but in this case I'm not to sure it works...
