I loved this film. It played before Disney/Pixar's Brave, which was also amazing. In the U.S., we have a phrase "suspending disbelief." It means you "agree" to believe in a film or game, even though you know it's fiction. Personally, I think that's really hard to do with most films, but I was so enchanted by this one.

Do you think the little boy is special in a way most characters in today's movies aren't?

Interesting take. I absolutely agree on your “suspending disbelief” approach. And to take it one step further, I think what makes Pixar movies really special, is that they are consistently based on a fairly simple formula: (simple to take notice of, not implement it -- obviously) they place an absolutely relatable character in an absolutely incredible situation, be it a post apocalyptic robotic future or a janitorial job on the moon.

What strikes me as authentic in this film (and to some degree in most Pixar films) is the boy-like wonder and innocence in their view of the world. Kids, in general, whether they are born in harsh circumstances or not, they maintain (for a handful of years that is) their wonder, their unadulterated (pun intented) approach of discovering the world and who they are.

So, to get back to your question, the boy is not really that special, in my opinion. It's just a boy. Most likely other movies have lost touch with the relentlessly awe-inspiring experience of being a kid.
