To be a musician today is different from 10 yrs ago, so how should a newborn artist do to make money on his/hers music and if you would start something to help artists/bands to get going (that would be kind of a modern label), what would a company or service like that do?

I haven't tried it myself, but I think Bandstand sounds promising for artists writing their own music. Or managers. bandstandapp.com

So, you think the future will be that bands manage their own music? Does that go for the publishing business as well? (keep track of when music is played on radio etc).

How does the artist make money on Bandstand?

I ones had an epiphany that you could subscribe to an artist. Like an online magazine by only with content from a specific artist. Music, updates, discounts on converts, merchandise, detailed info and updates etc. This service coud be managed by either a company (kind of a moderna record label) or the band it self. Just a thought, don't know if it would work....might even be what Bandstand wants to be?

The Magnatune concept is one way, which I don't know how it's doing. I bought some stuff there myself, years ago, in the baroque genre. That kind of musicians didn't get any money ten years ago either. Maybe this is a possible way for non-elite musicians to get a little money. See magnatune.com

We started an MP3 blog quite early and were one of the first to be indexed by mp3blogs.com, which I believe turned into Hype Machine. Still today, we get promotion emails from small record labels. There are many music blogs and I think it’s an interesting way for bands to market themselves, or small record labels to market their bands. The past few years, the music blogs increasingly use Soundcloud to embed tracks instead of just providing download links or various other embeddable players.

Hmm, the music blog phenomena is probably not to be underestimated. Could it be that simple that a music blog planet could do some magic? .... and some kind of rev share between the artist (70%) the logger (20%) and the service (10%)?

I think services like BandCamp are going to really help musicians succeed. Especially when you do things like the 'pay-what-you-want' model. It's really awesome, I have a lot of colleagues that have done really well using it. What would be cool would be something that ties together BandCamp with something like BigCartel, so someone could sell merchandise and music downloads in the same place.

I think everything must start with your music "per se" and then with how are you going to manage your personal brand, Internet is a good key to sell products, but what about those 2 things?

Does really "pay what you want" work? I really like the idea of it to work, but does it work for the masses or is it just specific initiatives etc that have had the benefit? Music is touching your feelings so from that perspective it should work, but we have also got used to the notion that music is free or almost free (Spotify etc).
