My proposal is to pay teachers more but hold them to higher standards. I understand that different communities have different challenges and need to have different ways to evaluate how much progress teachers are making, but you have to have some way to attract the best teachers and be able to get rid of the ones who aren't helping.
I think tenure needs to end. It's destructive. You have teachers who are coasting at a certain point, there's no motivation there for them to continue to improve and in some cases they're going in reverse. There needs to be accountability but there also needs to be a big bonus for teachers who are making an impact.
I see great charter schools making tremendous progress, like TEAM in Newark. This can be done.
