I was have a chat with a fellow entrepreneur at Plug-in yesterday. we both came to a conclusion that the startup scene in Singapore is not sexy. Unlike what the medias covers for SV or NY, their tech scene looks much more sexy and thus able to attract more talent/entrepreneurs into the eco-system. What do you guys think?

Since the help text says it's better to be wrong than to be vague, I'll say that is BS. Sexiness is the outcome of some other feature of those places. Maybe it's the confidence and ambition of the startups there. Maybe it's the great marketing talent they have there. We have better marketing talent in Singapore than say Philippines or Malaysia, but not enough to beat SF / NY.

There's also a lot to do with the flow of cash in the valley compared to Singapore. Cash CAN make a startup and the ecosystem look more sexy due to the perks that can be achieved.

Also, there's the issue of the definition of a startup. In the valley, lots of large companies are still referred to as startups. And it's usually working at the large "startups" that's considered sexy, though ongoing efforts from some accelerators do make it look a little more sexy to start your own.

"Cash makes sexy". Lol. Yeah unfortunate fact of life that cash makes buying some perks easier. Nice office and stuff.

I wouldn't broaden the definition of startups to include large companies. This is simply because large companies with hundreds of employees and no revenue stream are the exception rather than the rule. Quite meaningless to compare Singapore with those.
