What's incredible about this event is that it was put on by Red Bull. I may be mistaken, but the last time a jump from this height was attempted, it was for military research. Now, we have an energy drink company pushing the boundaries on many different fronts in science and in "action sports". On top of that, I watched this live on my phone walking around downtown NYC.
Yup its pretty awesome that a private company basically said "we want to see this get done, here is the money". I was actually with my grandfather at the time showing him the jump on my tablet and he was telling me about watching the Apollo 11 launch on his tiny fuzzy tv back in 69. Crazy to think how far we have come in such a short time in both science and technology.
