I don't see people talking about it unless they are devs or tech junkies. When I try to engage people to join App Net they point me to MacZoom (free) to prove it will fail. As if every one who wants to make a better social experience online doesn't have a chance at all. I love the App Net but I don't think my friends will join me if they need to pay or create another online frienship hood to be connectec.

I'm not sure it will "take over," but I definitely believe it will catch on and have a decent user-base. I agree that most people who are into it right now tend to be devs or techies, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. With a name like App.net it kinda seems targeted at devs anyway. As for whether it will overtake Facebook, I don't think it will because of the very premise it's founded on: no advertisements. Ads, whether we like it or not, are ways of getting information to us about products or goods that we might be interested in. As much as I hate them sometimes, seeing ads in my newsfeed on FB does give me a sense of the world outside of my social circle.

For Devs there are options for social sharing. I don't think AppNet was made just for devs. It's here to compete as it says here:tinyurl.com

I think ADN will succeed for a number of reasons

1) The yearly charge will keep dropping, once it gets to $1-2 a month, friction of getting people to join will vanish.

2) some people dont use FB now because of privacy issues, parents on FB, FB is a distraction with diminishing ROI. ADN will get some of these people as twitter's low character limit has a uncomfortable learning curve

3) as twitter and FB try to monetize their services they are driving away some companies who think they are not getting a square deal. ADN can move in on those companies to generate some additional revenue by asking users to opt in for promoted posts.

4) twitter has really put a bee in devs bonnets, they will work hard to give ADN a good shot at success.

well, I think Appnet needs a more focus marketing direction. or market approach. Linkedin is getting stronger everyday just with a big lie that is meant for business people. (its another Facebook anyway) but I think people are trying it because of the way they are selling it.

True. But right now they are still in alpha. They are literally adding new API's every week and building the service. Its not even 30k users at present, Dalton said he will announce it when they hit that many users.

As you said before, right now its for tech junkies. Once it hits beta with most features done, then I think we will see a big marketing push. By then it will have so many apps and services tied in that it will be the 3rd social network we use and for a lot of people it will be the end of using FB or twitter.

Ya, and I never got the hang of Linkedin. I dont know why friends who work in a completely different fields keep adding me.

ADN also has a monthly membership now. So if someone wants to try that out for a month they should.

Right now I find it useful as the global feed is very manageable and its possible to have good conversations with people I don't know but have similar interests and make new friends. While most tech junkies have strong opinions and will figuratively pull each others hair out over one word in an argument, their opinions are also malleable to facts and people who make a wrong argument can be convinced of where their thought process went off the rails. Right now for me ADN is Internet utopia. :)

actually, its more than that. or rather the hope is that it becomes more than that and its a pretty good start so far.

the idea is that app.net will be the backend on which developers can build a service/game/app that they want to build. one of those services is app.net itself which is a twitter clone for all intents and purposes.

and its true that the number of people on it is not even 30,000 so far but like i said before:

1) still in alpha so the low number is in some sense an advantage for now.

2) dalton caldwell keeps hitting the right buttons (for now). i paid $50 for a year long membership in the beginning, when the price dropped down to $36/year my membership was automatically extended by 4 months.

So I am happy with ADN so far.

I see you like appnet. And thats cool. I like the new myspace.com but I think it will never be number one. Dont get me wrong I love tweetbot for Mac and it was 20 bucks I just feel that Appnet separate users instead of join users.

I was with you till the last line. That I think is too strong a statement for a service that has been out only for a few months.

When Twitter first came out not many people gave it too much thought. It was the tech junkies, developers and geeks who pushed its boundaries and in the end twitter succeeded as a microblogging/networking/news source service and became the 2nd largest social network on the internet. But they are making missteps like pushing devs away and taking away characters, making the learning curve steeper for new users.

ADN does all that twitter does already, albeit on a much smaller scale and as my friends are not on ADN at present it gives me a chance to make new friends while keeping up with the old ones on twitter.

true. I'm more close to the idea of trying it out.. I am not really sure with whom i will be enjoying it. what kind of new frinds are inside that small bubble? interests? If I want to push an audience to my ADN page do you think they will join? (I'm a radio morning show host)

The global feed is useful at present with so few users. I browse it to find interesting stuff and have had a number of conversations with new people on tech, politics, movies, songs, tv shows, education, etc.

Again, a small audience means that its easy to find stuff, its easy to be heard in a conversation, the crowd is knowledgeable and polite, people are willing to listen to an opposite point of view without things degenerating like they do on most comment threads and the entire experience is enjoyable. Just like it is on branch at present.

The difference is that branch is free and ADN is paid. I dont mind paying for ADN as I see it as an investment that will hopefully grow beyond this and will manage to keep adding value as it grows.
