Are there any publications focused on thoughtful writing about design?

To be honest fellas there are none. It bothered me so much I even created one awhile back just never put it live (would be tons of work). The closest is theindustry.cc but it's very vague and not a lot of great content.

That's interesting Dan, curious to know how you approached that.

Would it be fair to ask what we consider good/thoughtful writing to begin with? Also what standards do we use to judge it by?

Something was said about the generality of the term design — it's hard to write for such a broad industry. First we need to see design disciplines come into their own as separate and distinct in the same way interior and industrial design have. Product design (although an unglamorous title) seems to be gaining this momentum, but the definition is still somewhat nebulous.

What I am interested in seeing (and working on with a collaborator now) is a community around interaction/design/code that flips the ALA model. Coming into this industry with a background in print and brand design, I don't quite feel at home in the code-first/design-second community. I want to see a group built around a design-first/enabled-with-code mentality.

@Keenan - so that was the rationale behind me creating designarray.com yet it lays dormant, besides a few hundred uniques a day. The problem is that even though every piece was transcribed from an email interview, it takes *forever* to post content. I admire the guys behind The Great Discontent hugely for consistently delivering nice longform pieces -

The thing is there is great content out there; it just needs to be filtered in a news.ycombinator way. I'm unaware of any services that hope to curate and collate good written design content? (I think FictiveKin are working on something to help.)

Admin is the biggest time investment and it is quite prohibitive. Ryan and Tina do an amazing job on TGD and put in quite a bit of time on it.

The mysterious project we are working on is very specifically for the craft of code community. It'll be a slow burn at first, and only expand by bringing in more helping hands. Excited to share some if it soon!

The thing I see with projects like TGD, Offscreen and the like is that they are mostly (if not entirely) interview based writing. Really good writing at that but it seems to still signal the need for other forms.

What void to these types of publications fill and what other forms are lacking at this time?
