Certification of the design industry was a particularly hot (and polarizing) topic roughly a decade ago. I suspect it remains as polarizing now as it was then, but a lot has happened to the design profession (yes, profession) since. Design is now deeply segmented (print vs. interaction vs. service vs. environmental, etc.) and designers are now considered "technologists, entrepreneurs, design thinkers, social activists" among other things.
I am curious what, if any, benefit the design profession could gain by implementing certification today? What could it lose?
Why has this conversation all but died in the last decade? Did we just give up? Or does the topic have no merit?
