The NFL supposedly will look at creating a new developmental football league - more than likely to begin in the spring of 2014.

What can the NFL do to make sure this league sticks - and doesn't follow the likes of the World League of American Football/NFL Europe and the United Football League into alternative football oblivion?

The six teams I chose, in order to cut down travel costs and allow for better scout access, are Tallahassee, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Mobile, Alabama; Jackson, Mississippi and Columbus, Georgia.

You and I know what the NFL can do to make it successful and it's a pretty simple formula. Spend the money needed and pay the bills.

I would prefer that the league be slightly more national in scope. Being regional, or national, is one of the things that would allow for people to view this as a developmental league that matters as opposed to a strictly minor league effort.

What can they do?
-> Partner with non-NFL investors and partners who want to build something from the ground up.
-> Treat it as R&D, do truly unique things!
-> Find Coaches who are outside of the box. I always thought experimenting with the spread, run and shoot, etc would make alternative football a heckuva lot more fun.

Some more notes I just took, with some changes to the above:

- 6 teams in inaugural season
o Chattanooga, Tennessee – Davenport Field at Finley Stadium (capacity 20,668) or Memphis, Tennessee – AutoZone Park (capacity 14,384)
o Charleston, South Carolina – Sansom Field at Johnson Hagood Stadium (capacity 21,000)
o Columbus, Georgia – A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium (capacity 15,000)
o Mobile, Alabama – Ladd-Peebles Stadium (capacity 40,000)
o Hattiesburg, Mississippi – M.M. Roberts Stadium (capacity 36,000)
o Tallahassee, Florida – Bragg Memorial Stadium (capacity 25,500)

Each team would have 46 players, and each would be paid $10,000 for the 6-game regular season. For the championship game, the winning team would be paid $5,000 per player, and the losing team would be paid $2,500 per player.

In 2014, here is what the schedule might look like:
o Week 1 – March 7-9 (Friday-Sunday)
o Week 2 – March 14-16 (Friday-Sunday)
o Week 3 – March 21-23 (Friday-Sunday)
o Week 4 – March 28-30 (Friday-Sunday)
o Week 5 – April 4-6 (Friday-Sunday)
o Week 6 – April 11-13 (Friday-Sunday)
o Championship Game – Sunday, April 20

- Each player would have the opportunity play 6 or 7 games of live professional action, and the season would be over before the 2014 NFL Draft (April 24-26), and the season would be over prior to any teams starting their first OTAs.

- Attract coaching staffs in tune with player development – perhaps out-of-work college head coaches (i.e. Ron Zook) or a Marty Schottenheimer-type who gets vast enjoyment from the player development aspect of a league like this.

- No player can have played more than a total of 8 regular-season games in the NFL, and be older than age 26 when the season starts.

- During the regular season and for the championship game, no more than 15 of 46 players from each team can be non-NFL-allocated players.
