I just did an interview with the school paper about the postcard project and it turned into "why do projects like this" and I was like THEORIES BEHIND SOCIAL MEDIA OMG.

there's a lot of academic study in participatory media right now. Start with Henry Jenkins.

Like like like. One of my closest friends did her senior project on analyzing fanfic surrounding Supernatural. Fandoms (well, culture construction in general) fascinate me.

Jenkins rocks.

Also in my deepest heart of hearts I want to do that CMS at MIT and I'm swooning over the fact that Jenkins created it.

I've got a ton from the theory side when you get through his stuff. My interests during my MA were all in participatory media (though for me it was more how messages traverse national and cultural identity). But I can point you in the direction of other "theorists" (for the record, McLuhan rejected the label theorist).

He also rejected the words "clarity" and "linear argument."

Andddd this is why I remember nothing from reading him previously.
