At last night's Hack & Chat, we wondered if there were any Ruby apprenticeships in town that could help individual members of NYC Ruby Women improve their code skills.

As our community of female Rubyists grows, we're looking for new opportunities for our members to learn, share and improve their skills.

One Ruby pair programming opportunity I know of:

- ProPublica Pair Programming Project

If you have a background in news and you're interested in applications development for newsrooms, ProPublica's program that might interest you. The development team members are really nice and very, very smart.

CodeMontage isn't an apprenticeship per se, but it has similar value and is flexible around another job, for example. Coders get open source, social good projects selected to get them to the next level of coding expertise. Coders learn a git workflow and receive detailed code reviews so they build a portfolio of high quality code for an application that makes a difference.

I don't know of any programs, but isn't this partially the theory behind NYCRubyWomen itself? I mean, I'd gladly pair with anyone for the sake of learning, whether they're more or less experienced than me.

And you're right, Danielle — an important part of NYC Ruby Women's purposes is definitely about working together to improve coding skills.

What I was wondering is whether businesses offer full-time apprenticeships that deeply immerse people in daily coding and code process for a set period with the express intent to train the apprentice.

There's Thoughtbot's Apprentice.io program, but I believe it's only in the Boston area - thoughtbot.com

Locally, not an apprentice program but still focused on training people full-time in Ruby, there's Avi Flombaum's Flatiron School - flatironschool.com
