Guy has an awesome track record (imo) so it could be good. Unfortunately they haven't released any concrete info on the direction they're taking with it so it's hard to say. I can't imagine Samuel L. Jackson would do anything other than a spot guest star here and there which would leave us with who exactly to lead the show? Coby Smulders as 'Maria Hill' maybe? Colson is presumed dead.
There's a great opportunity for them to give breadth to the Marvel cinematic universe here so we'll probably see heroes and villains kicking arse -- but to what extent? Jeph Loeb is the Executive Producer for Marvel's TV division and despite having a good track record on Lost he was also on Heroes which eventually tanked. Superhero TV is tough when it's not animated.
"No Ordinary Family" one season and gone. "The Cape" didn't even finish a season that I know of. "Blade" gone. "Heroes" early success but suffered a blow from the writer's strike midway through it's second season. "Birds of Prey" gone. "Smallville" was successful but was aimed at CW teens so I don't know.
It could be really cool if they made it a spy and espionage type series with just a tinge of the super hero community. The occasional cameo by super heroes alter egos could be kind of cool or if they were stopping plots by some of the Marvel baddies by being spies.
I think if it is too much about super heroes and some subpar action and special effects people will only be focused on the some of the lesser elements of the series.
I agree if they try to go too effects heavy that will open it up to a lot of criticism. However, you have to have the hellacarrier in there, so it will be tough. It really needs to be a show that could stand completely on its own without any of the Marvel universe, and let that be the cherry on top.
Well, Heroes lasted long enough with a good deal of special (or at least special-ish) effects. Hopefully S.H.I.E.L.D.'s writing crew will manage to make up for that series' ultimate downfall. As the organization is understood in the comics, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s primary "goal" is dealing with the super-powered bad guys. So what I would expect to see is a series with a good deal of special effects, more than likely with some season-long arcs of a team of super-spies stopping the latest HYDRA master plan. I'm putting my money on a blend of "The Avengers" and "24".
