What are the little (or big) things you do to make sure you're taking advantage of your age?

gee, this makes me feel old and boring already :D

i traveled a crazy bunch when i was in my early 20s and took extended trips. glad i did, it's not possible now. (to start with, i'd lose my visa status if i left the US for more than 3 months)

then again, i read this and i think of my many friends in their 30s (most live in san francisco) who do all these things (chase open bars, stay up all night, have sex marathons, not have a career path), and i realize being youthful is a state of mind.

#4 is very good "If you’re unhappy and someone offers you a way out, take it." I think it's an example of a broader point which is "Learn to figure out what you really want."

The biggest thing I had to learn in my 30s (and unlearn from my 20s) was how to know what it feels like (physically, emotionally) when I know what I really want. This may be easier for other people. I know I'm still working on this a lot.

My concept of what I wanted was *highly* influence by what I thought I ought to want. And I'd learned all kindsa tricks for convincing myself I really wanted things that I didn't in fact want at all.

#2/#14 are kinda easy if you can figure out what you really want in the first place.

Ha, this is kind of cool since we're all at such different stages — both in terms of our actual age and the stage we're in in life. Didn't realize that when I started this.

@Jason - I'm sort of the opposite. I'm super analytical and can really clearly and effectively define the pros and cons of whatever choice I'm making... but then after that I try to make the decision too rationally (which ironically is my version of a "gut" feeling), rather than just making decisions on a whim. I feel like this has served me pretty well in the long run (no huge train wrecks yet!), but the older I get the more I try to force myself to not do that so damn much — even if it's just in little ways like... ordering the slightly ridiculous cocktail at dinner.

I actually don't agree with a lot on the list (on a personal level)... I feel like part of being young is doing whatever you want, which ties into Jason's advice of "learn to figure out what you really want".

Yeah, I don't love all of them, either. I thought it would be cool to branch *because* many of us would disagree/have our own rubric for what "taking advantage of your 20s" means.
